Intimate Roberts Regional Recreation Area + Joaquin Miller Park Wedding » Oakland, California by Vivian Chen

Michelle and Drue's intimate wedding in the redwoods was a magical affair that unfolded amid the natural beauty of the Oakland Hills. The day began with a heartfelt exchange of private vows in the morning at Joaquin Miller Park, creating an intimate atmosphere that set the tone for the day. The couple, surrounded by towering redwoods, ventured into the forest for some portraits amidst the serene and picturesque surroundings.

Later in the afternoon, the celebration continued at the Madrone Picnic site at Roberts Regional Park, where a small gathering of friends and family eagerly awaited. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, with snacks and drinks setting the stage for the main event. A clearing in the forest adorned with charming DIY paper flowers became the backdrop for Michelle and Drue's wedding ceremony in additional to other DIY touches decorating the picnic site. Officiated by a dear friend, the short and sweet ceremony included exchanging heartfelt vows and rings, before sealing their commitment with a kiss. Afterwards, the newlyweds led their guests down the makeshift aisle to a baseball field, where a large group photo was taken in the stands, capturing the joyous spirit of the occasion.

The festivities continued with a picnic reception featuring several paellas by Ñora Cocina Española and an impressive charcuterie spread. Laughter and love filled the air as the couple's siblings and parents shared touching and humorous toasts, creating a warm atmosphere as the sun began to set behind the trees. The evening concluded on a sweet note with a delicious cheesecake dessert, marking the end of a day filled with love, laughter, and the enchantment of the redwoods.

A Bay Area Biophiliac's Guide to Redwood Wedding Venues by Vivian Chen

To say I love redwoods would be an understatement. As a self described biophiliac, redwood forests hold a profound place in my heart – they are a place of peace, my sanctuary and happy place. I love hiking under their canopy breathing in the smell of damp forest air on misty, foggy mornings all while feeling small and insignificant among these ancient beings. I’ve even been lucky enough to work with Save the Redwood League, a partnership that allows me to chronicle their efforts to preserve these magnificent woodlands for generations to come. By embarking on a personal mission to explore as many groves as possible, I’m able to combine my love for these majestic trees with my love of weddings.

DIY Joaquin Miller Park Redwood Grove + Good Neighbor Wedding » Oakland, California by Vivian Chen

When Arlene and James reached out, they asked about finding a redwood grove for their intimate wedding. Having spent so much time in hiking Oakland hills, I knew of the perfect spot that could host a small gathering of 30 people. Their sweet and short ceremony was officiated by James’ roommate and afterwards, we explored the forest for some portraits alone. For their reception, they rented out the back garden of Good Neighbor on Piedmont Avenue where local caterer Ñora made huge portions of paella paired with colorful drinks. The atmosphere was joyous and vibrant with all the guests beaming and glowing with laughter. Moving toasts continued the evening before Arlene and James cut the cake and shared in a little sparkler celebration. Truly a super fun and intimate evening!

Intimate Muir Woods National Monument + Del Popolo Elopement » Mill Valley + San Francisco, California by Vivian Chen

Stephanie and Kirk love spending time outdoors so Muir Woods National Monument felt like the perfect fit for their tiny wedding celebration. I met up with them in the early afternoon and we hiked out to a small secluded spot along the Bootjack Trail for some portraits. (You can usually find clusters of ladybugs in this particular spot along Redwood Creek!) Afterwards, we met up with their families and headed over to the ceremony spot, tucked away at the base of an ancient sequoia. Stephanie’s sister officiated and they exchanged sweet vows and rings. After hugs and a few tears, we all headed into San Francisco where they celebrated with a delicious meal in the back patio at Del Popolo. As a thank you, Stephanie and Kirk wrote personalized letters for each of their family members as place cards.

Magical + Foggy Redwood Grove of the Old Trees Backyard Wedding » Occidental, California by Vivian Chen

Michelle and Arthur knew they wanted to keep things simple and intimate with a touch of elegance for their family focused wedding. When Michelle’s aunt offered up her gorgeous Occidental property, Chanda from A Monique Affair was tasked to turn their backyard into a space fit for a formal but cozy celebration. Michelle got ready upstairs in the master bedroom overlooking the gorgeous coastal forest before heading to the front of the home for a joyous first look with Arthur before gathering with their daughters to prep for the ceremony. Their nuptials featured a sand ceremony where their daughters N + Z could participate as it was important that they felt included with this momentous occasion. As Arthur and Michelle shared their vows, the coastal fog quietly rolled in. This made for a magical scene afterwards as we headed to LandPaths Grove of the Old Trees down the street for some redwood grove portraits with just the two of them before dinner. A delicious vegan dinner was prepared out by the pool while family and friends shared heart warming toasts. Cake and dancing kicked off the evening celebration as the fog settled in thicker, blanketing everything in a misty cool white. I could not have asked for a more radiant and sweet couple in a more lovely setting!

Intimate Autumn Themed UC Botanical Garden Wedding » Berkeley, California by Vivian Chen

Taylor Ann and Jan were married under the redwoods at the Mather Grove in UC Botanical Gardens in Berkeley. The overcast October weather made for the perfect moody autumn feel on the forest floor. Taylor Ann got ready at her family’s Airbnb and after a first look with her father, we headed over to the venue. Taylor Ann’s grandmother carried the rings for the ceremony and the couple shared personal vows. Afterwards, everyone headed over to Julia Morgan Hall where guests were treated to a delicious dinner featuring multiple types of mole. The evening wrapped up with a dance party on the deck while dining on cheesecake for dessert.

// This is a pre-COVID wedding. I have several weddings from before the pandemic that I never got to share. While I’m a stickler for chronology, I also love these wedding photos so much and want to share them with you all.

Cathedral Grove at Saratoga Springs Wedding » Saratoga, California by Vivian Chen

Hallie and Josh were married on a warm summer day in a gorgeous little spot nestled in a redwood forest along the Saratoga Creek. Hallie and Josh chose this location because the redwoods reminded them of where their story began almost a decade ago under the redwoods at UC Santa Cruz. As they told me, “Hallie's roommate was on an intramural volleyball team with Josh, and after attending a few of their games, Hallie started hanging out with the team. Our friend groups mixed, we realized we were both psychology majors, and we started studying together for the classes we shared. Josh asked Hallie out a couple times, to no avail, but nevertheless, he persisted! After a few months of pseudo-dates, we started officially dating sophomore year and made our way through college together. We decided to move to San Francisco after college and have been growing up together ever since.”

The day began at the Juniper Hotel where both of them got ready with their wedding party. Hallie’s brother shared his custom brewed beer with everyone before Hallie presented her bridesmaids and mother sweet thank you gifts. Once everyone was dressed, we headed to Saratoga Springs. As friends and family hustled around to help set up for the party, we completed our group portraits and then spent some time with Hallie and Josh wandering the grounds for their portraits. Their ceremony was officiated by Josh’s good friend from Seattle, Bryan and their vows had everyone in tears. After the ceremony, the party got going with delicious appetizers and drinks before the guests were treated to a picnic style dinner of salads, pasta and barbecued chicken. My favorite part of the day was during their toasts where their parents and close friends all shared hilarious and touching stories about the couple. Once the sun set, the dancing started and Hallie and Josh completed the day with cupcakes and dancing to their favorite 90s hits.

Redwood Grove Old Mill Park Wedding » Mill Valley, California by Vivian Chen

Lindsay and Ariel’s wedding day began with a traditional tea ceremony at the Mill Valley Inn. Both sets of parents as well as some uncles and aunts were honored with offerings and tea and cookies. In exchange, Lindsay and Ariel’s family offered their blessings and red envelopes. The surprise of the morning was when Lindsay’s mother pulled out a wedding gift that Lindsay’s grandmother prepared and saved for her before she passed. After a sweet and emotional morning, we all headed over to Old Mill Park where Lindsay and Ariel officially saw each other for the first time. We took some time to shoot portraits before Lindsay was whisked away to wait and hide in the public library next to the park. Under the shade of the redwoods, their wedding ceremony included lots of sweet stories, including how they first met—a real life Craigslist missed connection! Afterwards, everyone headed to the Mill Valley Community Center for a delicious reception of fried chicken with a geode cake and s’mores for dessert. (Big thanks to James and his team from Limelight Productions for keeping the day running smoothly.)

Untraditional Pema Osel Ling Redwood Grove Wedding » Watsonville, California by Vivian Chen

Meredith and Jorge chose the untraditional route for their redwood wedding in the Santa Cruz Mountains. They rented out Pema Osel Ling, a Tibetan Buddhist retreat, which allowed all of their wedding guests to spend the long weekend together. Florali provided the gorgeous floral arrangements while A Paper Flower Wedding helped keep the day flowing without a hitch. Since Meredith is a professional dancer and Jorge is a writer, their creative backgrounds meant that their celebration was uniquely them. Instead of a white dress, Meredith wore a custom made soft green draped shift gown. Instead of a typical wedding ceremony, Meredith and Jorge sat in the round and their friends sang songs and read poems. Since Jorge’s family is from Spain, every part of the day was translated from English to Spanish and vice versa. After the ceremony under the redwoods, everyone headed down to the Shrine lawn for a delicious family style meal paired with delicious Spanish wines. And of course, the evening wrapped up with an epic dance party that went well into the night.

St. Columba Church + Lake Merritt Terrace Room Wedding » Oakland, California by Vivian Chen

Jessica and Adrian were married with a small family only church wedding at St. Columba Church in Oakland. After the traditional Catholic ceremony, the couple headed out to the Oakland Hills where we took some portraits in the redwoods. It was a nice little peaceful getaway before we all heading to the Terrace Room at Lake Merritt the main celebration. The large reception included a pianist that entertained the party the whole evening. As a twist on the classic clinking of glasses to get the couple to kiss, the pianist picked a couples name out of a fish bowl and that couple had to kiss first and Jessica and Adrian were to imitate their kisses. After dinner, Jessica and her friends lead a fun singalong before everyone enjoyed dancing and special Indonesian desserts as nod to Adrian's heritage.

Mather Redwood Grove + UC Botanical Garden Wedding » Berkeley, California by Vivian Chen

Tammy and David got married at one of my favorite locations, UC Botanical Garden in Berkeley. The day started at a nearby Airbnb where everyone helped David try to figure out how to tie a bowtie. Afterwards, we headed over to the Mather Redwood Grove at the Botanical Garden where we snapped some group portraits before their sweet ceremony. Tears were shed as Tammy and David exchanged vows in front of their friends and family. They took a moment alone in the grove after the ceremony before heading over to Julia Morgan Hall for cocktail hour and dinner reception where the festivities continued on into the night.
